Holy crap, Bob. Be careful out there. Just catching up with your posts so far. Good stuff. What a good dad you are, and what an adventurous son you have.

If you're looking for something to do after Noah takes off, Anzo-Borrega State Park is an interesting desert park. Reachable by a road from the Salton Sea highway on the east or from the town of Julian -- which is pretty neat itself -- on the west. You can even visit Bunky's former home on the golf course in Borrego Springs.

We've crossed at Tecate many times and agree that it's the most friendly crossing -- in both directions.
All the best to Noah!

Ernie,

I have a Pentax adapter, which did cost some money but works very well.

Longer lenses work fine, with a couple small issues:

I bought a KatzEye OptiBrite focussing screen with a split image center to use manual focus lenses on my K20D. It's a vast improvement, in general, but is not optimized for longer lenses so doesn't help as much.

The P645 300/4 with the 1.4 converter is pretty sharp on the K20D, but needs a tripod and decent technique (Naturally. That's like shooting a 600+).

It easily matches my Canon 100-400 at the long end in quality.
